A XF starting on the evening of 21 October and continuing through the night, Russian forces launched a large combined missile and drone attack across Ukraine. The main direction was Kyiv, where three waves of ballistic strikes reportedly involved 21 missiles. Ukrainian authorities reported one death and 22 injured in the city, including four children. Later national reporting attributed two deaths and 34 injuries, including five children, to the broader attacks across 12 regions. The strike caused fires and destruction in six Kyiv districts, damaged residential buildings and civilian facilities, and affected the Southern Bridge and metro infrastructure. Como o descrevem as fontes ucranianas

Ukrainian sources generally frame the attack as a “demonstrative strike” carried out almost immediately after the latest negotiations, suggesting that Russia’s conduct had not genuinely changed. They emphasise the human cost, including the injury of children, and the damage to residential areas, the historic centre, a monastery, the Epicentr hypermarket, the Southern Bridge and metro infrastructure. Official commentary also contrasts the destruction with Steve Witkoff’s description of Vladimir Putin as a “humanist”, while stressing the need for stronger air defences, faster missile supplies, pressure on Russia and sanctions.

Como o descrevem as fontes internacionais

International coverage placed the attack within the context of the newly announced possibility of renewed peace talks between Ukraine, Russia and the United States. US and Qatari reports highlighted the timing of the strike and contrasted diplomatic signals with Russia’s military action. The international framing focused more on the political and symbolic implications of the attack than on a detailed inventory of damage in Kyiv.

Onde as versões divergem

The casualty figures vary because reports were issued at different stages of the attack and by different sources. Early reports referred to at least six injured and later to 15 injured, including two 15-year-olds; the State Emergency Service later reported one killed and 22 injured in Kyiv, including four children. A later Ukrinform report cited 24 injured, including five minors and two small children, while an Al Jazeera correspondent reported two deaths and more than 40 injuries. The number of districts affected was initially described as four and later consolidated into six. Missile figures also differed: most Ukrainian and international accounts said 21 ballistic missiles were used in three waves, while some monitoring reports referred to approximately four strike weapons or identified Zircon missiles separately.

Contexto

On 20 October, Ukraine, the United States and European partners held talks in Norway. The following day, US envoy Steve Witkoff met Vladimir Putin in Saint Petersburg, after which the Kremlin said Putin had agreed in principle to resume trilateral Ukraine–Russia–United States negotiations after 10 November. Russia regularly uses combined missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities, and ballistic missiles present a particular challenge for Ukrainian air defences, including Patriot systems.
